Current odds:

Based on the odds this is an ASP game. AOHW is higher than you’d expect for a game involving Portugal but, then again, they were so poor against Iceland. I expect to trade this.

I’m going to keep this short as I have said quite a bit about these two teams in the Iceland v Bulgaria preview blog.

Some facts from the first games played by these two teams:

  1. Ronaldo does much better in club football than he does on the international stage and it seems very much like that if he is not in form then Portugal are not in form. The players around him show little flare of their own.
  2. That said, Ronaldo was not involved in the only goal that Portugal scored in the Iceland game.
  3. There could be questions asked about the Portugal defence given that they conceded the equaliser against the run of play to Iceland.
  4. As already stated in the previous blog, Austria had been on a massive unbeaten run up until the Hungary defeat.

This game is now hard to read given that Portugal and Austria were so poor in the opening games. On balance, if they both played as badly here then you’d have to favour Austria to win simply because they did at least have the excuse of having to play with 10 men for the last 25 or so minutes.

I’m going to take the easy route with a prediction that this one is most likely to end in a draw. So 1-1 is my guess simply because, if Hungary can get two past Austria, Portugal should manage one. It must also be noted that Austria have gone 13 games at major tournaments without keeping a clean sheet and that makes 0-0 unlikely.
